The Many Uses of Wall Sconce Lighting

by

wall sconce lighting is a form of illumination in which a protective fixture, the sconce, holds a light source against the wall. Traditionally, the term has referred to covered lights or torches which have been mounted in this manner. Now, in more modern times, it has come to refer to gas and electric lights which are mounted in the same way.

The original use of wall sconce lighting is for illumination of a long passageway. Several of these fixtures would be found lining the walls, from the beginning up to the end of the passage. In many modern places today, these lights still serve the same function. That's because using them in this manner provides both illumination and a point of interest while a person is walking along. And if the lights are mounted on a stylized sconce with a Gothic or Victorian design perhaps, they serve as decorative pieces as well.

Another use of this type of lighting is for creating ambiance, in the manner of mood lights. Any given room may be decorated with these fixtures, without ruining the effect of brighter and more functional lights. And with strategic placement and a flick of the switch, these sconces can instantly change the mood into a more subdued one, perfect for places where relaxation is usually sought, such as a bedroom, living room, or even a bathroom.

But apart from creating a mood, a wall sconce lighting may also be used to highlight certain features of interest in a location. For example, a big and original painting may be highlighted with wall sconces, on top of more powerful lighting already in place. They may be interspersed with plants, or used to set off windows or display stands. They may also be placed on posts along a garden path or patio to highlight the vertical design and illuminate the path as well.
